Sponsor a month in our calendar

If you run or work for a local business, our own Calendar Girls style calendar is a great opportunity to support a good cause and promote your business cost-effectively.

We are producing our own alternative WI-style calendar, and 100% of the proceeds will go to St Barnabas Hospice in Grantham (formerly Gifts Hospice). We've already stripped off before the camera, and calendars will be on sale soon at £6 each.

Each month in the calendar is available for sponsorship.  For just £60 your message will be in customers' homes for a full month, plus the positive PR associated with supporting a local good cause. We will try to match the theme of the month with your business type, and it's a great opportunity to highlight seasonal offers. Contact for more information.

Calendar Girls production meeting 25th July

It's not too late to get involved with Calendar Girls. The first production meeting - looking at all non-acting elements such as sets, costumes, props - will be on Wednesday 25th July at 7.30pm at the Green Room.

Like a lot of drama groups, we could use more men to join us. Why not get involved with the backstage side of Calendar Girls, so that you get to know us by the time we're casting for our next show? It's a great way to get a taste of being part of a play without the pressure of learning lines!

We have a great time on and offstage, and it's a good way to meet new friends. The GDS social scene is really important with our parties, meals, trips and fundraising events.

The Green Room is our rehearsal room - check out the location here.

GDS' 66th Annual General Meeting

Grantham Dramatic Society's 66th Annual General Meeting will be held at the Society's rehearsal rooms on Friday 6th July 2012.

This meeting is a legal requirement of all organisations like ours and the elections to the Committee (Trustees of the charity) will determine how the Society is run over the next year.

This is your chance to vote, ask questions, meet fellow members, pay any membership subscriptions, review the successes and challenges of the past year and look forward to an exciting year ahead. While the AGM is open to the public, only paying members of the Society may vote.

We look forward to seeing you at the AGM!

NODA praises our 39 Steps

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) came along to see our recent production of 'The 39 Steps' and wrote a lovely review:

"This spoof on John Buchan’s well known novel and the Alfred Hitchcock film of 1935 provided an excellent evening’s entertainment. The cast of four, who between them covered a multitude of parts, coped with all the costume changes, characters and locations admirably. Most of the parts falling on the shoulders of Paul Meakin and Tony Lane as Clown 1 and Clown 2 but Steve Sale as Richard Hannay did not have an easy time either, being on stage for most of the time - he gave an excellent characterisation as Hannay. Helen Pack was equally busy as Annabella, Pamela and Margaret. Poor Annabella’s death scene was one of the comedy highlights due to her excellent performance.

This fast moving comedy covered all the plot of the film with the humour and pace being maintained throughout the production. The cast are to be congratulated on this, because, if not done well, the piece would fall apart.

Congratulations also to the directors and producers for bringing all this together, and also to all the backstage team for making all this possible, with simple, but effective scenery and special effects, accompanied by efficient changes of scene. This was my first visit to this company and I was very impressed with the standard and enthusiasm of all involved. Best of luck with your future productions."

Castings for Calendar Girls dates announced!

At long last, and after much excitement in the local am dram community, we are pleased to announce the casting dates for Calendar Girls!

Our castings are done through a round-table reading at our rehearsal room - The Green Room. Everyone takes it in turns to read different parts in a relaxed and friendly environment. We always welcome new members so feel free to come along and try for a part. Ideally, you should come to both readings to have the best chance to show your abilities.
  • Tuesday, 19th June 2012, 7.30pm - First reading for Calendar Girls
  • Thursday, 28th June 2012 7.30pm - Second reading for Calendar Girls
There are a variety of roles for 10 women and 4 men of a range of ages. To be considered for a part you must be available every evening of the play week from 5th to 10th November 2012, and preferably the normal rehearsals the week before too. We usually rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week, and perform four nights, plus technical and dress rehearsals. We may add a matinee performance on Saturday 10th November too. You will need to become a member for at least the duration of the rehearsals and performance - current membership fees are £6 a month for full members.

A NOTE ABOUT NUDITY: Although this show is well known for featuring nudity, it shouldn't be intimidating. The script is very cleverly written so that nobody should be exposed (smoke and mirrors). You (and your partners and families!) should, however, be comfortable with the idea of showing some skin if you want to go for one of the six women that feature in the calendar scene!

While you're here, why not take our survey to help us make some important decisions about Calendar Girls and future productions. You'll also be in with a chance of winning tickets to see Calendar Girls, or a £10 high street gift voucher! Take our survey.

39 Steps success!

We knew we were having fun with The 39 Steps, so we hoped that the audiences would enjoy it too. It turns out they weren't disappointed! We got a great review from the Grantham Journal, plus lots of lovely comments on Twitter and Facebook.

We also got some fantastic support from the cast of the official London production, and other productions around the world. We loved being part of the 39 Steps family!

And we'd like to offer our sincere thanks to Grantham Estates and Cinderella's for letting us take over their shop windows with our displays.

Free GDS performance - Dickens at the George

GDS and The George shopping centre are working together to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens with the event 'Dickens at the George'.

On 24th March between 11am and 2pm, Grantham Dramatic Society will be performing a comic extract from Nicholas Nickleby at the George shopping centre in Grantham. Along with other activities and entertainment, we're calling it a Victorian day. Come along and celebrate the birth of one of our greatest authors and follow in his footsteps!

In 1838, Charles Dickens passed through Grantham on his journey north, researching school conditions for his novel Nicholas Nickleby. He stayed at the George hotel (now the George shopping centre) and wrote to his wife that it was "the very best inn I have ever put up at". High praise! Dickens went on to mention The George in Nicholas Nickleby, immortalising it forever.

We have adapted the extract that includes the George, and will perform it several times during the day. Town favourite, Elaine Bishop, will be singing Victorian themed songs to further entertain shoppers. You'll be able to have your own Victorian style photo taken in our studio, and take part in other activities.

Our thanks go to the George centre for their support, and to Cinderella's costume hire for their help.

Charity clothes swap was fabulously successful!

Our fabulous charity clothes swap went fantastically well, with over 50 people turning out to get a new look at Cafe Leo. BBC Radio Lincolnshire also interviewed us live on air, no doubt helping to swell the turnout!

We were so busy, we had to bring the clothes out in shifts as hangers became available! Take a look at our pictures to get a sense of how busy the event was. There was an eclectic mix of clothes and accessories available, and the fashionistas in attendance got to try out new styles. Lots of people wanted to know when the next event would be, so we will definitely run another swap in future - keep an eye out for information.

Our friends Paul and Jess at Cafe Leo were the perfect hosts, and kept everyone's energy up with their yummy coffees and cupcakes. The perfect fuel for an evening of swishing!

Wednesday, 1 February 2012

Join us for a fabulous clothes swapping evening!

Come along to our swishing/shwopping/clothes swapping event at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 22nd February at Cafe Leo! Have fun updating your wardrobe for next to nothing, and support the Arts in Grantham at the same time. A fabulously fun evening out, come with friends and have a giggle. This event is open to all, so please invite friends and family!

How it works: bring your good condition clothes, shoes and accessories to swap. We'll also have a small stock of clothes already there. For each item you bring, you'll be given a swap token. Exchange your swap token for any item. So, if you bring 5 items, you'll get 5 swap tokens and be able to take home 5 other items.

What if you see more items you'd like than you have swap tokens? You'll be able to buy more swap tokens for a minimum donation of £1 each.

Entry: £3, including a free glass of wine and an extra free swap token! Tickets available on the door, or in advance from Cafe Leo. Wine, coffees and cupcakes will also be on sale, courtesy of Cafe Leo. We're hoping to also have a couple of crafty stalls - more info to follow.

Find us on Facebook, and share our event with your friends and family - we've set up an open event, so simply visit the page and click the 'Invite Friends' button to let everyone know about it!

Organised by Grantham Dramatic Society and hosted by Cafe Leo. We're raising money to support the running of our growing group, and to diversify with new projects. Any unswapped items will be donated to local charity shops.

Readings for The 39 Steps

Grantham Dramatic Society will be performing The 39 Steps at Grantham's Guildhall Arts Centre from 23-26 May 2012. We will be holding readings for this production at The Green Room (see Map section) on 24th and 26th January at 7.30pm. These readings are your opportunity to try out for a part, and are an informal chance for the Director to see if you'd be suited to one of the roles.

For more information about the play see the latest production page.
