GDS' 66th Annual General Meeting

Grantham Dramatic Society's 66th Annual General Meeting will be held at the Society's rehearsal rooms on Friday 6th July 2012.

This meeting is a legal requirement of all organisations like ours and the elections to the Committee (Trustees of the charity) will determine how the Society is run over the next year.

This is your chance to vote, ask questions, meet fellow members, pay any membership subscriptions, review the successes and challenges of the past year and look forward to an exciting year ahead. While the AGM is open to the public, only paying members of the Society may vote.

We look forward to seeing you at the AGM!

NODA praises our 39 Steps

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) came along to see our recent production of 'The 39 Steps' and wrote a lovely review:

"This spoof on John Buchan’s well known novel and the Alfred Hitchcock film of 1935 provided an excellent evening’s entertainment. The cast of four, who between them covered a multitude of parts, coped with all the costume changes, characters and locations admirably. Most of the parts falling on the shoulders of Paul Meakin and Tony Lane as Clown 1 and Clown 2 but Steve Sale as Richard Hannay did not have an easy time either, being on stage for most of the time - he gave an excellent characterisation as Hannay. Helen Pack was equally busy as Annabella, Pamela and Margaret. Poor Annabella’s death scene was one of the comedy highlights due to her excellent performance.

This fast moving comedy covered all the plot of the film with the humour and pace being maintained throughout the production. The cast are to be congratulated on this, because, if not done well, the piece would fall apart.

Congratulations also to the directors and producers for bringing all this together, and also to all the backstage team for making all this possible, with simple, but effective scenery and special effects, accompanied by efficient changes of scene. This was my first visit to this company and I was very impressed with the standard and enthusiasm of all involved. Best of luck with your future productions."

Castings for Calendar Girls dates announced!

At long last, and after much excitement in the local am dram community, we are pleased to announce the casting dates for Calendar Girls!

Our castings are done through a round-table reading at our rehearsal room - The Green Room. Everyone takes it in turns to read different parts in a relaxed and friendly environment. We always welcome new members so feel free to come along and try for a part. Ideally, you should come to both readings to have the best chance to show your abilities.
  • Tuesday, 19th June 2012, 7.30pm - First reading for Calendar Girls
  • Thursday, 28th June 2012 7.30pm - Second reading for Calendar Girls
There are a variety of roles for 10 women and 4 men of a range of ages. To be considered for a part you must be available every evening of the play week from 5th to 10th November 2012, and preferably the normal rehearsals the week before too. We usually rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week, and perform four nights, plus technical and dress rehearsals. We may add a matinee performance on Saturday 10th November too. You will need to become a member for at least the duration of the rehearsals and performance - current membership fees are £6 a month for full members.

A NOTE ABOUT NUDITY: Although this show is well known for featuring nudity, it shouldn't be intimidating. The script is very cleverly written so that nobody should be exposed (smoke and mirrors). You (and your partners and families!) should, however, be comfortable with the idea of showing some skin if you want to go for one of the six women that feature in the calendar scene!

While you're here, why not take our survey to help us make some important decisions about Calendar Girls and future productions. You'll also be in with a chance of winning tickets to see Calendar Girls, or a £10 high street gift voucher! Take our survey.

39 Steps success!

We knew we were having fun with The 39 Steps, so we hoped that the audiences would enjoy it too. It turns out they weren't disappointed! We got a great review from the Grantham Journal, plus lots of lovely comments on Twitter and Facebook.

We also got some fantastic support from the cast of the official London production, and other productions around the world. We loved being part of the 39 Steps family!

And we'd like to offer our sincere thanks to Grantham Estates and Cinderella's for letting us take over their shop windows with our displays.
